Metro Version Of VLC Media Player For Windows 8 Hits Kickstarter Goal

The VLC Media Player is probably the greatest media player available today.  Yesterday VideoLAN, the organization behind the media player, reached their Kickstarter goal of around $65,000 to build a Metro version of the software for Windows 8.  The project was funded by over 2,600 people.  They beat their funding goal with five days to spare.  VideoLAN even released an update for “backers only.”

VLC Announces New Android App On Google Play

On top of updating the desktop version of the video player, VLC has announced an all new beta Android app available on Google Play. VLC for Android has the ability to play a list of video and audio content with a basic controller, which can play/pause/skip content. The app is not exactly stable yet according to VLC staff. VLC 2.0.2 Has Retina Display Support

VideoLAN, the portable multimedia player and encoder, has been updated to version 2.0.2 with several new features.  For those of you that purchased a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, you will notice that the updated version of VLC supports the high-resolution screen, including icons, menus, and the video content.  VLC 2.0.2 no longer has the “building font cache” window that pops up after every single update, which delays movie watching.  VLC 2.0.2 has support for Growl 1.3 and the “keep aspect ratio” when resizing option.  You can download the new version here.

VLC Gets Removed From The Apple App Store

Movie media player software VLC has been removed from the Apple App Store. Apple did not consider removing it until a lead contributor to the VLC project and Nokia employee Rémi Denis-Courmont complained that the app was violating a GNU public license (GPL). Apple App Store downloads have DRM applied to them, which violates the GPL. VideoLAN, the group that created the desktop version of VLC did not have anything to do with the media player getting removed.

VLC Media Player Integrated Into uTorrent

The BitTorrent team has integrated the VLC Media Player within the uTorrent application. That means now you can play media files from within the client directly. Last month BitTorrent released uTorrent 2.2 with the BitTorrent App Studio. Using the VLC app in uTorrent, users will now have a shortcut to play media files without having to open folders.
