Birgitta Jónsdóttir is a former WikiLeaks volunteer and is a member of Parliament in Iceland. Recently the courts in the U.S. decided to push for access to her Twitter account because of her involvement with WikiLeaks. Jónsdóttir is furious with the decision of the U.S. government and has decided to take her case to the Council of Europe.

A U.S. judge ruled that Twitter must release her details of her account and two other accounts that are linked to WikiLeaks. Jónsdóttir found out that her Twitter account was under scrutiny by the Justice Department this past January so the decision should not come off too much as a surprise.

Jónsdóttir was involved in the release of a video that shows U.S. military helicopters firing at two Reuters reporters in Iraq. Jónsdóttir believes that the U.S. government is after her to use in a case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

“This is a huge blow for everybody that uses social media,” stated Jonsdottir. “We have to have the same civil rights online as we have offline. Imagine if the US authorities wanted to do a house search at my home, go through my private papers. There would be a hell of a fight. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

The other two Twitter accounts that the U.S. government went after belongs to Jacob Appelbaum and Rop Gonggrijp. The government also sought Twitter records that belong to Julian Assange and Bradley Manning.

Apparently the Justice Department sought this information without a search warrant. But the Justice Department used a law that went into effect in 1994 called the Stored Communications Act, which gave them the ability for them to demand information from Twitter including the IP address of users, bank account details, user names, screen names, and mailing addresses. People that opposed the government’s decisions argued that this information was too broad and unrelated to WikiLeaks. Judge Liam O’Grady disagreed and said that the information sought was to establish key facts related to ongoing investigation.

Twitter users volunteer to turn over their IP addresses when they sign up for the service. “Petitioners knew or should have known that their IP information was subject to examination by Twitter, so they had a lessened expectation of privacy in that information, particularly in light of their apparent consent to the Twitter terms of service and privacy policy,” said Judge O’Grady. The petitioners wanted to unseal the reason for why the Justice Department was seeking the account information, but the judge denied that request.

My opinion on this situation is that as adults we know there are consequences to every action. If you get your hands on any confidential document no matter if it belongs to the government of any country (not just the U.S.) and you expose it a public forum, then you are asking for your civil liberties to be jeopardized. I’m not a fan whatsoever with how the government is handling the wars overseas knowing that they make a lot of mistakes. But if I was a WikiLeaks volunteer and I was uploading confidential government documents, I would expect consequences to come my way.

I’m sure Julian Assange did not expect that he could keep leaking documents and stay away from consequences. He was doing what any other government activist would do… He was “fighting the man” and was ready to deal with consequences after.

Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, has lost a high court appeal extradition to Sweden to face rape charge allegations. Lord Justice Thomas and Mr. Justice Ouseley handed down the decision for Assange’s appeal against a European arrest warrant that was issued by prosecutors in Sweden. Two Swedish women filed rape and sexual assault charges against Assange during his visit to Stockholm in August 2010.

The judges dismissed arguments that the warrant was invalid and the descriptions of the rape and sexual charges was unfair and inaccurate. Assange’s lawyers said that it would take about 14 days to decide whether they plan to appeal to the supreme court. His lawyers are also challenging a £19,000 cost against him.

Assange urged people to go to a website for his support. “No doubt there will be many attempts made to try to spin these proceedings as they occurred today but they were merely technical. So please go to swedenversusassange.com if you wish to know what is really going on in this case,” said Assange.

If Assange is denied the right to appeal, then British law enforcement offices will have to arrange for him to be sent to Sweden within 10 days.

Julian Assange is an Australian publisher, journalist, and Internet activist. WikiLeaks is a whistleblower website for worldwide news leaks with a purpose of creating open governments. WikiLeaks has published material about extrajudicial killings in Kenya, Church of Scientology manuals, Guantanamo Bay procedures, Iraq War documents and Afghan War documents.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is now making members of his team sign a nondisclosure agreement that WikiLeak’s own leaked material is their property. “You accept and agree that the information disclosed, or to be disclosed to you pursuant to this agreement is, by its nature, valuable proprietary commercial information,” states the agreement, “the misuse or unauthorized disclosure of which would be likely to cause us considerable damage.” The unauthorized disclosure of WikiLeaks documents will have a penalty of 12 million British pounds ($20 million). Leaks to the press by WikiLeaks loses them the ability to sell the documents to publishers. [Wired]

Yesterday I wrote about a new website called SafeHouse. SafeHouse is The Wall Street Journal’s WikiLeaks competitor. The Wall Street Journal said that those who submit whistle-blower documents to SafeHouse will be guaranteed anonymity through encryption. Jacob Appelbaum, a former WikiLeaks volunteer, and a developer of the Tor anonymity network, immediately noticed flaws with SafeHouse.

Appelbaum said that SafeHouse had insecurely implemented Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. When someone visits wsjsafehouse.com, the unencrypted website offers a link to the HTTPS encrypted version, but it does not use Strict Transport Security to switch insecure connections to an encrypted connection.

Appelbaum also pointed out that SafeHouse’s SSL server allows people to connect to forms of encryption that lack perfect forward secrecy. “That means anyone who takes their server or breaks into it could decrypt all their previous traffic,” stated Appelbaum.

The Wall Street Journal reserves the right to disclose any information to law enforcement authorities without notice unless that individual or group makes a special request for anonymity. SafeHouse recommend people to use Tor to hide their origin, but Tor is not compatible with SafeHouse’s Flash-based submission system. SafeHouse’s website states “You can be anonymous by not providing your name and contact information on this page,” but Appelbaum called this statement a “blatant lie.”

WikiLeaks is best known for containing whistle-blower documents that are confidential in nature. WikiLeaks provided anonymity to those who submitted the documents. WikiLeaks grew in popularity and journalists started
thinking to themselves why they didn’t come up with the idea. Most publications ask for tips from readers without guaranteeing anonymity. The Wall Street Journal is launching a new portal that has a similar concept.

The Wall Street Journal is launching a service called SafeHouse. SafeHouse is a secure uploading system where people are encouraged to send newsworthy e-mails, databases, financial records, e-mails, etc. File transfers are made through encrypted connections and the documents are encrypted too. SafeHouse has it’s own servers that are separate from WSJ.com.

Arab news network Al Jazeera recently started a similar service called ajtransparency.com. AJTransparency has been up and running since January 2011.

Here we have the world’s most comprehensive database about people, their relationships, their names, their addresses, their locations, their communications with each other, and their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all accessible to US Intelligence.

Assange also pointed out that Facebook, Google, and Yahoo! have user interfaces that automates data collection for U.S. Intelligence.

It’s not a matter of serving a subpoena, they have an interface they have developed for US Intelligence to use. Now, is the case that Facebook is run by US Intelligence? No, it’s not like that. It’s simply that US Intelligence is able to bring to bear legal and political pressure to them.

It’s costly for them to hand out individual records, one by one, so they have automated the process.

eBay payment subsidiary PayPal.com has cut off a support account for U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning. The account that was frozen belonged to the Courage to Resist organization. The Courage to Resist partnered with the Bradley Manning Support Network for raising funds in support of Manning. Manning was one of the whistle-blowers of government documents that was leaked on to Wikileaks. “We’ve been in discussions with PayPal for weeks, and by their own admission there’s no legal obligation for them to close down our account,” said Loraine Reitman of the Bradley Manning Support Network (Support Network). “This was an internal policy decision by PayPal.” [BradleyManning.org]

Wikileaks has hired Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz as an adviser about how to handle the Justice Department’s subpoena to retrieve personal information from Twitter. The Justice Department is aiming to collect private communication between Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Wikileaks volunteers over the leaked cables case. This is interesting because at one point, Dershowitz agreed with Hilary Clinton that Wikileaks was a danger to the U.S. and international diplomacy. The lawyers of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange are trying to prevent him from getting extradited to Sweden to face rape charges. The lawyers have pointed out that the Swedish prime minister made some remarks that would prevent Assange from having a fair trial there. Assange’s lawyers pointed out that the Swedish prime minister said Assange is an enemy of the people and is public enemy number one. The Swedish prime minister also said that Assange was opposed to women’s rights, which the lawyers said was a lie.
