Lastpass Acquires Bookmark Syncing Company Xmarks

Universal password manager company LastPass has acquired bookmark syncing company Xmarks. Essentially LastPass saved Xmarks from shutting down. Xmarks was expected to shut down in January 2011 due to a lack of revenue. Xmarks will continue to be free but there will be a premium plan that comes with Android and iPhone app support for $12 per year. LastPass Premium can be bundled for $20 per year. [Lifehacker]
Xmarks Is Shutting Down

Bookmark syncing service XMarks is in the process of shutting down. XMarks is based in San Francisco, California and they shut down their website today. XMarks is a four year old company that was started by Mitch Kapor. Kapor put his own money into the company and then it received more funding from Redpoint Ventures. XMarks was even close to selling the company to Google, but the deal fell through. At one point XMarks had about 5 million active users. However Google and Firefox both built bookmark syncing into the browser so their business model was difficult to sustain. [Xmarks Blog]
Xmarks Now Has Tab Syncing Across Multiple Browsers

Xmarks is a commonly used web bookmarking tool that directly competes with Google Bookmarks. Considering that they have some tough competitors, the company has to stay ahead of the curve. Therefore Xmarks recently decided to unleash tab syncing across browsers. It doesn’t matter if you are using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer, Xmarks now lets you see the tabs you had open on another session and re-open the same ones again.
