Adobe Launches HTML5 Web Animation Software Edge

Posted Aug 1, 2011

Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE) is launching new software called Adobe Edge. Edge will allow designers to create web content using web standards such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. Flash is not built in to this software. This software is expected to co-exist with Adobe Flash and not to replace it.

“HTML5 is an opportunity for Adobe,” stated Adobe Group Product Manager for Adobe’s Web Pro Segment Devin Fernandez. “That’s not to say there aren’t opportunities for Flash.”

Adobe Flash will continue to push forward in areas that HTML5 cannot reach such as 3D gaming. Edge currently focuses on a core animation engine. Other HTML5 features will be added in the future like Canvas support, HTML5 audio and video tags, and a richer support for animating SVG graphics.

Edge users can import existing HTML documents and graphics, then style them with CSS3. The panels on the left and right provides access to properties of the .EDGE files. When the projects are completing, the content will work on iOS, webOS, Android, BlackBerry PlayBook, Firefox, Safari, IE9, and Google Chrome.

Adobe Edge is available as a free download today while in public preview. The 1.0 product version is expected to launch next year.
