Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) has joined the Document Foundation advisory board. As part of the partnership, the company will be developing GPU acceleration for Libre Office applications. The Document Foundation is known for overseeing the Libre Office applications. Libre Office is an alternative to Microsoft Office, but it is open source and free.
?It is great to work on LibreOffice with The Document Foundation to expose the raw power of AMD GPUs and APUs, initially to spreadsheet users,? stated AMD’s corporate vice president of Heterogeneous Solutions Manju Hegde. ?Bringing the parallelism and performance of our technology to traditional, mainstream business software users will be a welcome innovation for heavy duty spreadsheet users, particularly when combined with the compute capabilities of the upcoming generation of AMD Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) based products.?
The future versions of Libre Office will use GPU acceleration through OpenCL. Other board members of the Document Foundation includes Google, Intel, Red Hat, and Suse.
