Android and iOS Have A 91% Control Of The Smartphone Market

Posted Feb 15, 2013

Analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC) have compiled information about the combined marketshare of Android or iOS.  It turns out that the combined marketshare for the two mobile operating systems was 91.1% shortly after Q4 2012.

Android accounted for around 69% of all smartphone sales.  That means around 500 million Android-powered smartphones were sold in 2012 versus the 136 million Apple devices that were sold.  Apple has around sold 19% of smartphones.

Sales of the iPhone are higher in the West and the increased numbers for Apple products are due to the lower prices of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S after the iPhone 5 was introduced.  Unfortunately BlackBerry device sales dropped over 36% last year due to the delayed arrival of the BlackBerry 10 operating system.  Microsoft phones have the lowest market share at 2.5%.
