Apple has hit 1 million apps on the Apple App Store according to Appsfire. The App Store launched over 4 years ago in July 2008. Appsfire co-founder Ouriel Ohayon said that out of the 1 million apps that have been approved since 2008, around half of them are paid apps. Roughly 160,000 of the 1 million apps are games.
Since a lot of developers have removed their apps, what we do know is that well over 1 million apps have been submitted. There are around 400 million iTunes users that have downloaded over 35 billion apps. In comparison there are over 675,000 Android apps that are available on the Google Play store and they have hit around 25 billion downloads.
As the App Store grows, staying competitive in the marketplace becomes harder and harder. Over the weekend, the New York Times wrote an article about how Shawn and Stephanie Grimes spent two years trying to make millions on the App Store, but ended up making only $5,000. They sold their cars, sold their possessions in a yard sale, rented out their house, stayed with family for a while, and sold their 401(k).
