Apple has announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion applications from the Apple App Store. Nearly 20 billion applications were downloaded in 2012 alone. The App Store has over 500 million active accounts and it hit a record two billion downloads in the month of December. There are currently 775,000 apps available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch across 155 countries. Over 300,000 apps are native to the iPad itself.
?It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,? stated Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. ?Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.?
Last month, it was reported that 50% of the total App Store revenue is paid to 25 developers. Personally I think that Apple needs to get better with featuring a diverse range of apps. The company appears to keep featuring Mint.com, Instagram, the Facebook app, The New York Times app, Flipboard, and Evernote. They also seem to keep featuring games like Where’s My Water, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, and Scribblenaut. I also believe that their acquisition of Chomp made things worse for the company. Navigating for apps one-at-a-time after searching for keywords did not really seem to help.
