Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has announced CarPlay, a new in-car infotainment system that connects your iOS device to vehicles. CarPlay was rebranded from “iOS in the Car.” CarPlay will be demonstrated at the Geneva Motor Show between March 6th and March 16, 2014.
CarPlay will allow iPhone users to make calls, listen to music, pull up Maps, and hear text messages. CarPlay will have Siri based voice controls and touch controls built. Some of the third party apps that are supporting CarPlay include iHeartRadio, Spotify, Stitcher, and Beats Radio.
As part of the launch, Apple partnered with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. CarPlay will also become integrated with vehicles made by BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota.
CarPlay will be available as an update to iOS 7 on lightning-powered iPhones: iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S.
