Former Apple head of advertising Ken Segall spoke at an event held by the University of Arizona’s Marketing Department where he revealed some of the names that Apple considered for the iPhone.  Segall said that they considered the names Telepod, Tripod, Mobi, and iPad.  “Tripod” was a play on the triple functionality of the iPhone being a phone device, a music player, and a web browser.  The “Mobi” was just short for the word mobile.  The iPad name was brought up since the tablet did not exist yet.  TelePod was a combination of the words “telephone” and “iPod.”
