Apple has hired Samsung chip designer Jim Mergard according to the WSJ. Before Samsung, Mr. Mergard was the AMD chief engineer. Mr. Mergard was a 16-year veteran at AMD and was known for developing the AMD chip code-named Brazos for low-end portable computers.
Apple and Samsung are two of the most intense rivals. The two companies have multiple lawsuits filed against each other across multiple companies related to design and standard essential patents. But Apple and Samsung are partners with each other.
Apple relies on Samsung to make chips for smartphones and tablets. It is unknown whether Mergard will remain placed in Austin, Texas or relocate to Cupertino, California.
