The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone has hit an all-time high for marketshare in Japan. Apple has hit a 36.6% smartphone marketshare for Q1 2014. This is up from 25.5% last year. A major reason for Apple’s growth is because of the company’s deal with Japan’s largest carrier NTT DoCoMo.
Apple debuted the iPhone 5s and 5c with NTT DoCoMo in September and has been surging since then. Since the sales have been doing so well in Japan, Apple recently moved chief of sales for Japan and Korea Doug Beck back to handle North America where he is expected to help increase U.S. market share.
Apple shipped a total of 14.43 million iPhones to Japan over the past year. MM Research Institute also reports that Sharp holds a 13% marketshare and Sony has 12.3%.
