Nuance Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:NUAN), a voice recognition company and partner of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), is reportedly in talks for an acquisition by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (KRX:005930). Nuance is known for powering the technology behind Apple Siri. According to The Wall Street Journal, Samsung is allegedly a potential suitor.

Based in Burlington, Mass., Nuance licenses voice recognition technology to several companies including Apple and Samsung. Some investors have suggested Apple should buy Nuance and own the technology behind Siri and cut off competitors like Samsung or Google (Google Now).

There was speculation that Apple could acquire Nuance for $7 billion last year. Surprisingly, Apple acquired Beats for $3 billion this year.

Nuance does not handle the artificial intelligence built into Siri, but it provides the capability to interpret a user’s voice.
