Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) supplier Foxconn has shut down operations in Vietnam for 3 days due to anti-China protests over oil drilling. China recently started drilling for oil near Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.
These islands are controlled by the People?s Republic of China, but they are claimed by both Vietnam and Taiwan. Due to the disputed ownership, protestors in Vietnam attacked factories near Ho Chi Minh City. The violence has caused Adidas, Nike, and Walmart to halt production.
Foxconn is following suit by giving workings in Vietnam a three-day leave to ensure safety. Around 21 people have been killed in the violence.
