One of the suppliers for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly building samples of an Apple TV set based on OLED technology. There is an “unnamed” South Korean display manufacturer that is making organic light emitting diode panel samples for the “Apple iTV.” The iTV is reportedly going to be mass-produced next year, according to the Korea Herald, which cites IBK Securities analyst Lee Seung-woo.
The Apple iTV has been rumored for several years now. I won’t believe it until I actually see it. But if these rumors are true, it is interesting that Apple is pursuing OLEDs. Apple generally uses LCDs because OLEDs are difficult to manufacturer at sizes used for TVs.
OLEDs may be the reason for the delay though. “The delay is reportedly due to Apple’s attempt to shift LCD panels to OLED,” stated the report. “Though the yield rate of OLED panels is still not high for mass production, they are considered to be the best panels for TVs because of its high definition and the potential of curvedness.”
