Apple iPad 4G Claims Being Investigated In U.K.

Posted May 1, 2012

Apple is being investigated in the United Kingdom on whether the new iPad is actually “4G capable.” The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) is widening their investigation into the advertising of the new iPad. Currently there is not any 4G LTE access in the U.K. right now and the telecomm companies there have not advertised their HSPA services as 4G.

When LTE starts being rolled out in the UK, the chip in the new iPad will not work because of different bands being used. Apple has removed 4G references to on their UK website and in promo videos, but the product itself is sold as being WiFi + 4G.

Apple had to address a similar situation in Australia when the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) claimed that buyers were confused by “4G.” None of the LTE networks in Australia were supported so Apple refunded money to confused customers. They have refused to remove 4G references from the iPad in Australia though.
