Apple unveiled the iPad Air today, which is a tablet that has a 9.7-inch Retina display and a thin/light design. The iPad Air is 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the fourth generation iPad due to 43% narrower bezels built into the new tablet. The iPad Air has Apple’s new A7 chip with 64-bit desktop class architecture. The iPad Air has WiFi and expanded LTE cellular connectivity built-in. The A6 chip allows the battery to be smaller, which reduces the overall volume by 24%. The iPad Air has a 10-hour battery life.
“iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead. It is so thin, light and powerful, once you hold one in your hand you will understand what a tremendous advancement this is,” stated Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller. “iPad Air with its 9.7-inch Retina display weighs just one pound and packs the incredible performance of iOS 7 running on a 64-bit desktop-class Apple A7 chip, and delivers all-day battery life in the lightest full-sized tablet in the world.”
The new iPad Air also features the M7 motion co-processor that the iPhone 5s has. This processor grabs data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency.
The new iPad Air has two antennas, which supports Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology. This makes Wi-Fi performance twice as fast. This supports data speeds up to 300Mbps.
The iPad Air’s FaceTime HD camera has enhanced backside illumination sensors with larger pixels for better low-light performance. The iPad Air’s iSight camera has a 5-megapixel sensor, advanced optics, auto-focus, up to 3x video zoom, 5x still zoom, better dynamic range, automatic image stabilization, and video stabilization.
