Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPad mini components poses major challenges for suppliers

Posted Dec 8, 2013

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad mini with Retina Display is still not available at Verizon and AT&T stores in the U.S. This includes the iPad mini with Retina Display that has WiFi and cellular capability (3G/4G), indicating low supplies.

If you try to order the iPad mini with Retina Display through Verizon, you will notice that it is back ordered until December 16th as of Friday. AT&T is showing a back order of 21-28 days when ordered online. T-Mobile said that the tablet will be “available for shipment soon.” Fortunately, the availability of all iPad mini Retina models – WiFi and cellular – on the Apple store page has improved from 5-7 days from 5-10 days.

“It’s unclear whether we’ll have enough for the quarter or not,” stated Apple CEO Tim Cook during a fourth quarter earnings call.

The iPad Air is a different story though. The iPad Air became available for Verizon, AT&T, and other carriers on November 1st when it was announced. Most Verizon and AT&T stores have iPad Air.

The iPad mini has a 2048×1536 resolution, which is 326 pixels per inch (ppi). This poses a challenge for suppliers since building those types of displays are very complicated.
