Apple announced a new iPad mini with Retina display. This brings all of the pixels from the 9.7-inch iPad to the 7.9-inch screen that the mini is known for. The new iPad mini has Apple’s new A7 chip with 64-bit desktop class architecture. The new iPad mini also has built-in WiFi and expanded LTE cellular connectivity.
The new iPad mini with Retina display has all the 3.1 million pixels (2048-by-1536 resolution) that other iPads are known for. It has a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch.
The 7.9-inch Retina display in the iPad mini is 35% larger than screens on other 7-inch tablets and is the only small tablet that has the full iPad experience. Movies play at full 1080p HD.
The new iPad mini also features the M7 motion co-processor that the iPhone 5s is known for having. This processor gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency.
The new iPad mini has two antennas that supports Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology, which brings twice the Wi-Fi performance. This supports data speeds up to 300Mbps.
The FaceTime HD camera has improved backside illumination sensors with larger pixels for better low-light performance. The iSight camera has a 5-megapixel sensor, advanced optics, auto-focus, up to 3x video zoom, 5x still zoom, better dynamic range, automatic image stabilization, and video stabilization.
iPad mini with Retina display will be available later in November in silver or space gray. iPad mini with Retina display Wi-Fi models will be available for a suggested retail price of $399 (US) for the 16GB model, $499 (US) for the 32GB model, $599 (US) for the 64GB model and $699 (US) for the 128GB model. iPad mini with Retina display Wi-Fi + Cellular models will be available for a suggested retail price of $529 (US) for the 16GB model, $629 (US) for the 32GB model, $729 (US) for the 64GB model and $829 (US) for the 128GB model.
