Apple iPhone 5 On Verizon and Sprint Won’t Let You Browse and Talk

Posted Sep 15, 2012

The Apple iPhone 5 went up for pre-order at 12:01AM PST on Friday.  However if your contract expired, it is difficult to decide which carrier you want to use.  Verizon has confirmed that the version of the iPhone 5 will not support use of voice and data at the same time over its LTE network.  This means that Sprint won’t work that way either.  Apple is selling three different versions of the iPhone 5 to accomodate each carrier’s network.  Verizon and Sprint use the same type of iPhone 5.  The iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks, but it is not yet possible to do voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design.  AT&T’s iPhone uses GSM instead of CDMA so it allows talking and web surfing at the same time.  [The Verge]
