Apple is currently battling Proview in court over the trademark rights of the term “iPad” in China. Unfortunately for Apple, Proview won a court ruling against sales of the iPad in China. Proview Technology lawyer Xie Xianghui said that the Intermediate People’s Court in Huizhou ruled on Friday that distributors should stop selling the iPad. The lower courts in China are especially known for favoring local businesses over large corporations.
The good news for Apple is that this ruling may not have a far-reaching effect. Proview has filed lawsuits against Apple in several places and is requesting commercial authorities across 40 cities to block the sales of the iPad. Apple’s case is still pending in mainland China and they have appealed to the Guangdong High Court against an earlier ruling that was in Proview’s favor. Apple said that they do hold the trademark rights for “iPad” in China.
?We bought Proview?s worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple, and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter,? said Apple in a previous statement.
