Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has received a patent that describes a headphone system with sensors built-in that can detect heart rates, temperature, perspiration, and other details in regards to a user’s movements and activity. The patent was originally filed in 2008.
The patent details ways of integrating the monitoring system in earbud and on-ear headphone designs using accelerometers and other sensors. The sensors would be able to communicate through the cord to the iOS device or wirelessly with Bluetooth.
The sensors would either be contained within the headphones or in a detachable component that can be removed. The patent includes a description for controlling playback through head movements using the accelerometers in the headphones as well.
Apple is rumored to be focusing on health and fitness features, which would be heavily integrated in iOS 8. The new iOS is believed to feature a dedicated app called “Healthbook,” which would track a user’s activity data over time.
