One of Apple’s largest suppliers in China is being accused of labor abuses. China Labor Watch in New York published a 60-page report that reports Pegatron is violating Chinese labor laws, according to PCWorld. This includes unfairly deducting or failing to pay wages along with providing insufficient worker training. Workers at Pegatron are allegedly being forced into working overtime.
China Labor Watch also questioned Apple’s efforts to cap the factory work hours at 60 per week. Hours have been ranging at between 66 and 69 hours. Pegatron allegedly falsified worker attendance to keep the reported hours down. China Labor Watch reportedly analyzed three Pegatron factories in China, which are reportedly building budget versions of the iPhone. Between March and July, China Labor Watch sent a group of undercover investigators to work at the factories and interviewed almost 200 employees. Apple is investigating the reported issues.
Between now and 2007, Apple conducted 15 audits of Pegatron facilities that covers over 130,000 workers. Surprise audits were made at two of Pegatron’s factories in the past 18 months.
“Our most recent survey in June found that Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average,” stated Apple. Apple will be sending teams to investigate three Pegatron facilities this week.
