Asus launches the Chromebox desktop PC for $179

Asus has announced a new $179 Chromebox desktop that runs on the Google Chrome operating system and runs on the Intel Haswell Celeron processor.

“The Asus Chromebox offers the simplicity, security, and speed of Chrome OS in the most compact and powerful Chrome device to date,” stated Felix Lin, director of product management at Google. “Perfect for home, the classroom or the office, Chromebox is designed for the way we use computers today.”

Specs for the Asus Chromebox computer include:
– Fourth-generation Intel Celeron 2955U or Core i3 processor
– 2GB or 4GB of DDR3 memory
– Integrated Intel HD graphics
– 16GB SSD local and 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage (2 years)
– 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
– Gigabit Ethernet
– Media card reader
– 4 USB 3.0 ports
– DisplayPort
– Audio
– Kensington lock port
– 4.88 inches square and 1.65 inches thick

Asus is also including a VESA mount so that the system can be clipped behind compatible monitors and HDTVs. The system does not have a fan so it is very quiet. The Asus Chromebox automatically updates through the Internet and it can run thousands of apps through the Chrome web store. The Chromebox will be available this March. The $179 price is the cost associated with the Celeron processor and the Core i3 price will be announced in March.
