Barnaby Jack Passes Away One Week Before Black Hat Event Presentation

Posted Jul 26, 2013

Barnaby Jack was one of the world’s most renowned hackers.  His claim to fame was when he demonstrated how to hack an ATM.  He was scheduled to demonstrate how heart implants could be hacked, but he has died unexpectedly in San Francisco according to Bloomberg.  The city’s medical examiners reported that Barnaby Jack died on Thursday, but did not give any more details.

Jack’s presentation on the medical device vulnerabilities was scheduled for next week at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas taking place next week.  Jack said that one technique could even kill a person from 30 feet away.  Jack worked as the director of embedded devices at IOActive.  “Lost but never forgotten our beloved pirate, Barnaby Jack has passed,” said IOActive in a tweet.

Our condolences are with his family and friends.
