After BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) fixed some errors, they re-released the BBM app for Android and iOS recently. Downloads for the messaging software instantly skyrocketed. BlackBerry wrote on Twitter that they have hit 5 million downloads on Android and iOS so far. They hit 5 million downloads in the first 8 hours since it was released. Impressive!
BlackBerry did not disclose the number of Android downloads vs. iOS downloads.
BlackBerry is rolling out the app on a first-come, first-serve basis. People that want to use BBM on Android or iOS has to sign-up and receive an activation e-mail after that to get started. BlackBerry wants to ensure that their servers do not get overloaded by letting batches of people in at a time.
