Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) plans to fire Brian Maupin for creating a couple of animation videos that shows tech support talking to people about the iPhone versus the HTC EVO.
In one of the videos, the electronics store employee is talking to a lady about how Apple is just a brand and if they sold an actual brick and called it the iPhone, people would end up buying it anyway. The other video shows a fake Apple Genius bar rep having a conversation ripping on the HTC EVO and Google.
Maupin is a 25 year old living in Kansas City, Missouri and sold mobile phones at Best Buy as his day job. Now Best Buy is attempting to fire him over these videos, which has attracted over 1.3 million views on YouTube.
What makes the case interesting is that Maupin never put any connection to these videos and Best Buy. Maupin was asked to quit, but he declined to do so. Now HR at Best Buy is reviewing the case.
?I issued a statement to them explaining that the video was intended to be comedic and hence, not taken seriously by them or all these stockholders & customers they are worried about [being] turned off to buying from them due to the video,” said Maupin.
However Tiny Watch Productions, a company created by Maupin and his friends has videos that does reference him and Best Buy. ?I see it all as a blessing in disguise. I?ve wanted to start my career in graphic design/animation for so long, I see this as my kick in the pants to go get it,? added Maupin.
