Best Buy Sends Cease & Desist To Father Luke Strand Over God Squad Joke

Posted Aug 16, 2010

Father Luke Strand of the Holy Family Catholic Community in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin has a big sense of humor, but sometimes it could get him into trouble. This was proven when he painted his VW Beetle with a logo in black, white, and orange that reads “God Squad.” The painting on the car parodies Best Buy’s “Geek Squad” logo.

In response to Father Strand’s wittiness, Best Buy sent him a cease and desist letter for trademark infringement of the Geek Squad logo. Despite that the humor revolves around a touchy subject (religion), Best Buy public relations department head Paula Baldwin said that Best Buy must pursue all trademark infringements.

“This was a really difficult thing for us to do because we appreciate what Father Strand is trying to accomplish with his mission. But at the end of the day, it’s bad precedent to let some groups violate our trademark while pursuing others,” said Baldwin in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Best Buy is now working with Father Strand to create a new logo without infringing on their trademark. Father Strand had the car with the God Squad logo for about 2 years before the C&D arrived.
