Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates was interviewed by author Steven Levy about six months after Gmail was launched. Levy detailed the interview in his book In The Plex. Gates did not understand why Gmail was offering 2 gigabytes of storage to users.
However Levy told Gates that he had already “consumed more than half of Gmail’s 2-gigabyte free storage space.” Gates looked stunned at Levy and started questioning him.
“How could you need more than a gig?” asked Gates. “What’ve you got in there? Movies? Power-Point presentations?”
“How many messages are there?” asked Gates. “Seriously, I’m trying to understand whether it’s the number of messages or the size of messages.”
When asked about whether he tried Gmail back then he said, “Oh sure, I play with everything.” He added: “I play with A-Mail, B-Mail, C-Mail, I play with all of them.”
