Bill Gates Invests In Scientist Social Network ResearchGate

ResearchGate is a social network intended for scientists that has received funding from Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates.  The company raise a total of about $20 million in their new round of funding.  ResearchGate did not make an official announcement about the funding, but sources with The Wall Street Journal Deutschland confirmed that Gates was involved.

ResearchGate was founded by Ijad Madisch, Sören Hofmayer and Horst Fickenscher in May 2008.  The company offers tools and applications for researchers that want to share knowledge.  The company plans on using the funding to grow their revenue streams.

ResearchGate now has around 100 employees in Berlin and Boston.  The website receives around 2.6 million users and sees several thousand new sign-ups per day.  Existing investors in this round include Benchmark Capital, Accel Partners, and Founders Fund.
