The BBM Messenger service was initially only available on BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) made devices. But as BlackBerry lost marketshare against Android and iOS, it released BBM on those platforms.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen revealed during the recent earnings call that BBM now has 160 million registered users with around 85 million active per month. Of the 160 million figure, 50 million were BlackBerry users. When BBM is released for Windows Phone, the 85 million active per month figure may increase to 100 million. BBM for Windows Phone is expected to be released in July.
WhatsApp casts a large shadow on BBM though. WhatsApp now has around half a billion active users. Chinese messaging app WeChat now has around 355 million active users and is seeing around 1 million signups per day.
