Charities Outraged Over iPhone App Donations Ban

Posted Dec 9, 2010

The New York Times has published an article about how several charities are outraged at the decision by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to ban donations from within applications. Beth Kanter, the co-author of The Networked Nonprofit said that she is replacing her iPhone with an Android phone.

Kanter started a petition against Apple’s decision. So far she has over 1,600 signatures. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller said ?We are proud to have many applications on our App Store which accept charitable donations via their Web sites? in response to the criticism.

?One of Apple?s major objections has been that if donations were to go through its payment mechanism, it would have to be in the business of managing and distributing funds and verifying charities as well,? stated Public Radio Exchange executive director Jake Shapiro.
