The new iPad becomes a lot hotter than the iPad 2 when running a game according to Consumer Reports. When using a thermal imaging camera, Consumer Reports engineers recorded that temperatures hit as high as 116 degrees Fahrenheit on the front and the rear of the new iPad when running Infinity Blade II. Consumer Reports did the test while the new iPad was propped up on the iPad Smart Cover.

Other factors include that Infinity Blade II was being played without interruption for 45 minutes, no 4G connection, WiFi on, and 72 degrees room temperature. They also ran the test with the new iPad unplugged. The new iPad was 12 degrees hotter than the iPad 2 with the same tests. When unplugged, the difference was 13 degrees.
