Dell Acquires Enstratius, A Cloud Management Software Company

Dell has acquired cloud management software company, Enstratius.  Through the acquisition, Dell will be able to offer end-to-end cloud solutions.  Dell has been rapidly growing their cloud computing business as part of a bigger picture move to rely less on computer sales.

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Enstratius offers single and multi-cloud management capabilities.  The company’s applications are compatible with private, public, and hybrid clouds.  Enstratius’ software-as-a-service can provide automated application provisioning, application configuration management, and cloud utilization monitoring.  Enstratius supports over 20 public and private cloud platforms including AWS, Windows Azure, Rackspace, VMware, and OpenStack.

Dell Cloud Labs

One of Dell’s largest cloud computing initiatives is known as Dell Cloud Labs.  Dell Cloud Labs’ projects include Project Fast PaaS, Project Sputnik, and Project Crowbar.

Project Fast PaaS makes it possible to create an manage an open-source platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment.  Through the service, developers and IT managers can use an enhanced version of Cloud Foundry PaaS can quickly deploy applications to the cloud.

When Project Sputnik first started, it was originally intended as a six-month exploratory effort to create an open-source laptop targeted for developers.  This result in the recently created developer edition of the Dell XPS 13 laptop that uses Ubuntu 12.04.

Project Crowbar is an open-source cloud deployment framework that Dell created to support the company’s OpenStack and Hadoop-powered solutions.  The scope of Crowbar has been increased to include a DevOps model for additional cloud applications.
