E la Carte is a company that has designed a tablet called Presto that is focused on the restaurant industry.  The company has raised a $13.5 million Series B round of funding led by Intel Capital.  Romulus Capital also participated in this round.

The Presto tablet can sit at a patron’s table to display a restaurant’s menu with large photos and detailed descriptions.  Guests can order their meals when they are ready through the tablet.  The E La Carte Presto tablet also encourages impulse purchases and up-sell items like extra toppings or dressing.  The Presto also allows your guests to pay while they are at the table.

E la Carte acknowledges that younger and older people tend to look for distractions while waiting for their food.  Presto encourages users to join loyalty programs while they wait.  Restaurants that use the E la Carte Presto tablet are seeing a 9 times increase in reward program registrations.  The tablet also has several games that patrons can play while waiting.

The company was founded in 2009 by a group of MIT engineers.  The company is based in Silicon Valley and is backed by Y Combinator, SV Angel, and Lightbank.  The Presto is already used by thousands of restaurants.  E la Carte is working closely with HMSHost and Evergreen Restaurant Group.  HMSHost runs a good number of restaurants and coffee shops at airports and Evergreen runs many Outback Steakhouse restaurants.
