eMarketer, a market research company, has reported that around 1 in 5 people around the world uses a social networking website at least once per month. This number is expected to grow over the next few years.
Around 1.61 billion around the world uses Facebook, Google+, Instagram, and Twitter. This is a 14.2% increase from last year. In 2017, around 2.33 billion people will be using social networks. The human population hit 7.046 billion last year, which means that 22.8% of the population is using social networks per month.
The highest penetration of social network uses as a share of total population is in the Netherlands. Around 63.5% of all residents are social networking users. Norway is right behind them at 63.3%. The fastest growth in social network use is in less-developed markets. India saw the highest growth this year and will increase user numbers by 37.4%.
