Emirates Airlines To Allow Passengers To Use Mobile Devices For Calls Mid-Flight

Posted Oct 9, 2012

In the United States, using a mobile phone while on a commercial flight has been banned.  However Emirates Airlines is going to allow passengers on the A380 airline fleet to use their mobile device to make calls while in mid-flight.  The service works with a normal mobile phones in conjunction with an in-flight WiFi company called OnAir.  The service gets shut off when the aircraft is within 250 miles of the United States to comply with American laws.  The first call was placed on October 2nd and was made in China.  The FCC is reconsidering the use of certain devices while in mid-flight, but the FAA has not specified that allowing voice calls during flights on passenger phones are not being considered right now.
