Posted Feb 5, 2013

OpenStack is an open-source infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud computing project that was released under the Apache License.  OpenStack enterprise company Piston Cloud has raised $8 million in Series B funding.  The Series B investors include new investors Cisco Systems, Data Collective, and Swisscom Ventures.  Existing investors Divergent Ventures, Hummer Winblad, and True Ventures also participated in this round.

Piston Cloud plans on hiring more engineers with this round of funding.  They will also invest in more “differentiated IP” that runs on the OpenStack cloud stack.  The funding will also go towards boosting sales and marketing.  The company now has around 30 employees and they will be doubling that by the end of the year.

Piston Cloud was founded by several creators of OpenStack.  The Piston Enterprise OpenStack software is used for building a private infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud.  The OpenStack Foundation was started in September 2012 and there are over 150 companies that have joined including AMD, Intel, Red Hat, Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, Yahoo!, and VMware.
