Etsy Buys Mixel

Posted Jan 24, 2013

Mixel is a service that automatically combines photos into fun and beautiful collages.  Etsy is an e-commerce company that lets you buy and sell vintage items and art supplies.  “These talented designers and developers built a mobile app that helps you make and share fun, beautiful photo collages.

Now they are going to help us do even more with Etsy?s mobile platform. It?s going to be awesome,” stated Randy Hunt, the Creative Director of Etsy.  Etsy is not getting into the photo sharing business following the acquisition.  Mixel users will be able to still download past collages, make new collages, and share them on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.

Mixel’s team including Khoi Vinh, Scott Ostler, Akiva Leffert, and Roy Stanfield will work at Etsy’s mobile division.  Last year Etsy launched apps for iPad and Android.  The company also translated the iPhone app into 3 new languages with added seller tools.  Etsy’s mobile visits grew 244% in the past year and they represent around 25% of visits years round.  Almost one in three visits came from shoppers on their mobile devices during the holiday season.  Etsy expects this trend to accelerate.
