Facebook has launched a new service that will compete directly against services like LivingSocial and Groupon. The Facebook Offers service was revealed at a marketing conference at the beginning of March. It will allow local businesses to use their Facebook Pages to promote themselves directly to customers. They can showcase coupons, freebies, and promotions directly to the the news feeds of users.
When someone clicks on an offer, they would be able to redeem it straight from Facebook’s mobile apps or receive it by e-mail for use inside of a store, restaurant, etc.
The offers are free to create, but Facebook said that each will only be able to reach a limited number of people. I’m anticipating that eventually Facebook will start charging to reach a large number of people and this is just a way to keep potential advertisers engaged in using the social network as a marketing platform.
