Facebook Is Testing A Chat Rooms Feature

Posted Jun 27, 2013

Facebook is currently working on a new feature that is codenamed “Host Chat.”  Host Chat will allow users to set up chat rooms that friends can join without an invitation, according to sources with TechCrunch.  A Host Chat button will appear in the status update box on Facebook next to the “add photos/videos” button.

Clicking on the chat button will launch a chat room.  Hosts can name the chat room and invite more people to join.  The chat room will appear in a window that looks similar to the one-on-one Facebook Chat window.

Friends will be able to join the chats without an invite from the host.  An update about the chat room will appear on the News Feed whenever users start hosting chat rooms.  There is a mid sized group of Facebook employees that are testing the host chat feature in a text-only mode.  Photos, videos, and emoji will be added later on.

“We do test things from time to time with a small percentage of users,” said Facebook in a response to TechCrunch.
