Facebook is now the first private company in the U.S. to pay for a full-time beat police offer. On Tuesday, the Menlo Park City Council approved of Facebook’s offer to pay $200,000 per year for three years to hire a ?community safety police officer.?
?It?s safe to say this is unprecedented,? stated Jim Bueermann, president of the Police Foundation in an interview with NBC. ?But this may be the model of the future.?
Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters is in an affluent area and is one of the most educated cities in California. The city has a population of around 30,000 people.
Menlo Park Mayor Ray Mueller said that this was a generous gift and added that the contract states that the officer would spend most of his or her time near schools rather than the Facebook campus. The police officer would receive an annual salary of $108,000.
The officer would be required to gather intelligence on gangs, taggers, and drugs. He or she would also run fire and earthquake drills for schools and businesses in the surrounding areas.
