Facebook has released a new “On This Day In” feature that encourages nostalgia by showing users what their status update from that day in 2010 or 2009 said. Mashable reports that they found it mostly while browsing photo albums, but it is not to be available on everyone’s profiles yet. The feature appears to have rolled out in a limited test on August 11th and has started appearing to more users in the past day.
It’s possible I’m not seeing the feature because I didn’t post anything on August 15, 2010 or 2009. It shows up in a small box at the top of the right-hand column. Users have speculated that the feature could be a way to remind Facebook users that they’ve been on the network for so long and shouldn’t switch to something new (like, say? Google+).
