Facebook is going to open up a temporary office in Vancouver with around 150 developers working from there. The hires will be mostly recent engineering graduates. Vancouver was chosen since it was close to Facebook’s engineering office in Seattle.
The office will remain open for a year while the workers there apply for a work permit in the United States. Facebook is essentially keeping potential skilled work in Canada until they can be transferred to their headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
The immigration system in the United States is tough to deal with. Circumventing around the system may become the norm for tech companies as a result.
