Facebook just launched a new mobile app, Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android. It’s a standalone app that connects with Facebook’s message/chat feature to send and receive real-time messages between Facebook contacts. The app was developed by the Beluga team after the company was acquired by Facebook in March and delivers messages via SMS or through the app. GigaOM reports that the app is currently available in the US and Canada and will be available elsewhere soon.
