Facebook is shutting down their e-mail service. Facebook made the announcement in an e-mail sent to users. E-mails that are sent to the @facebook.com address will be forwarded to the primary e-mail address on file.
Facebook users can turn off the forwarding feature, which is switched on by default. Users that do not have a primary e-mail address on Facebook will not receive forwarded messages.
“Most people have not been using their @facebook.com email address,” stated a Facebook spokesperson.
Facebook launched the e-mail service in November 2010. The goal of the service was to provide a central inbox where users could send and receive e-mails and messages. The service did not really gain much traction.
