Facebook has decided to stop selling physical merchandise from their online gift store. The physical merchandise actually accounts for 20% of their sales.
Going forward, Facebook will focus primarily on selling digital codes and virtual currency along with the Facebook Card. The Facebook Card will be a reusable gift card that can be used at real-world retailers like Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Target, etc.
Facebook Gifts is not expected to be a large source of the company’s income, at least in the first year. Facebook will be able to save money by eliminating physical goods because they would no longer have to deal with delivery and management. Facebook’s new shopping services are expected to be rolled out entirely next week.
