Facebook Takes On Twitter and Google+ With “Subscribe” Button

Posted Sep 14, 2011

Facebook has added a new button called “Subscribe” within the social network. This makes it easy to filter out information that you don’t care about such as when someone plays a game on Facebook. You may also want to see more stories from your friends and less from co-workers.

Now you can also filter out information that comes directly from journalists, music artists, political figures, etc. You will start seeing the Subscribe button in the next few days. You can use the button to: 1. Choose what you see from people in News Feed 2. Hear from people, even if you’re not friends 3. Let people hear from you, even if you’re not friends.

You can also use the subscribe button to receive: 1. All updates: Everything your friend posts 2. Most updates: The amount you’d normally see 3. Important updates only like highlights from different friends and people that you subscribe to. If you see a Subscribe button on interesting people that you are not friends with, you can receive updates about them without being friends with them directly.

If you want to share your own updates publicly, you can get a subscribe button on your own profile too. You need to opt in to this feature from: http://www.facebook.com/about/subscriptions.
