Figure 1 is a photo sharing app for people in the medical profession. The look and feel of the app reminds you of Instagram. Photos are uploaded of a patient’s body with a condition and there is a diagnosis labeled in the comments below each photo.
You can filter what you want to see based on the category like critical care, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, family medicine, geriatrics, hematology, etc. Around 3.5 medical images are viewed per second on the website. Figure 1 recently hit around 50 million images viewed total.
Figure 1 respects anonymity so they make sure there is no identifying information about patients that appear on the photo sharing app. Through the app, doctors can share interesting cases among themselves.
Figure 1 was founded by Dr. Joshua Landy, Gregory Levey and Richard Penner. The three of them started the business after determining that physicians and students were using social media to share information about patients and were doing it in ways that did not protect the privacy of patients. Figure 1 is available on iOS and Android. Figure 1 has drawn users from over 10% of all the medical school students in the U.S.
