Flint Mobile is a mobile app company that started in April 2011. The company raised their Series A round around a year later. Based in Redwood City, California, Flint Mobile launched their mobile service on the Apple App Store in November 2012. Greg Goldfarb, one of the co-founders of Flint Mobile, over 15 years of experience in bringing products to market including roles in startups and public companies. Before starting Flint Mobile, Goldfarb worked at Ribbit before it was acquired.

Goldfarb told me that the goal of Flint Mobile is to address a “massive underserved audience of businesses that operate outside of traditional retail.” This includes coffee shops, beauty shops, accountants, graphic designers, tour guides, caterers, etc. These are the types of businesses that live-and-die based on repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals.

Goldfarb said in an interview with Pulse 2.0 that it takes 2 minutes for merchants to sign up and start processing credit cards. Flint Mobile also works as a social and online marketing solution. The receipts can be sent with a Facebook Page link that asks people to “like” their Page. This lets the merchants send follow-up communications to thank the buyer and offer deals. The e-mail address is given to the merchant whereas other merchants keep the e-mail address. There are over 17 million small businesses in the U.S. that Flint Mobile can tap into.

Flint Mobile has proprietary card scanning capabilities. The app lets you take a picture of a credit card for payment. The app does not take an image or video of the whole card surface, it only grabs the 16 digit number.

Flint Mobile also offers analytics in the form of a social dashboard for the transactions. The transactions can be searched based on keywords as well. The social dashboard shows which customers are posting testimonials. It also shows ratings and review summaries. The merchant can comment directly from the social dashboard.

Flint Mobile works with tens of thousands of merchants. The company even grew by a factor of 12 since the beginning of 2013.
